Standing on the Shoulders of Physicists in the Operating Room
Listen: https://www.medicsmusings.com/episodes/standing-on-the-shoulders-of-physicists-in-the-operating/
Learning objectives
After listening and discussing, participants should be able to:
- Identify common causes of operating room delays and equipment failures.
- Discuss how teams can address recurring OR frustrations without blame.
- Relate the basic mechanics of laparoscopic surgery to its practical challenges.
Discussion questions
- Which of the ten “laws of physics” describe real problems in your OR? Which ones have you personally witnessed?
- The radiology technologist's location “is indeterminate.” How does the humor land for different members of the team?
- Pick one recurring delay. What system change, not a person trying harder, would fix it?
- How do surgeons compensate for the fulcrum effect and loss of touch in laparoscopy?
- How can satire help, or hurt, conversations about OR culture?
Quick activity
Write an eleventh law of physics for your own OR, then turn it into a quality-improvement aim statement.
How to run it
Play the episode together (17 minutes) or assign it beforehand. Start with the first question to let people react to the humor, then move to the harder ones. Remind the group that the episode is satire and some of its “facts” are invented; spotting which ones is a good exercise in itself.
