Learning objectives

After listening and discussing, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the dimensions of burnout and its main system-level drivers.
  2. Discuss the role and the limits of humor as a coping strategy.
  3. Identify one system change and one peer-support practice your group could adopt.

Discussion questions

  1. The story is fictional. Why does the idea of Freud prescribing stand-up comedy land with clinicians?
  2. When does humor in medicine help, and when does it become gallows humor that harms patients or colleagues?
  3. What causes burnout in your setting? How much is individual, and how much is the system?
  4. Wellness programs are sometimes criticized for asking individuals to fix system problems. Is that fair here?
  5. Who do you talk to after a hard day? What would make that easier?

Quick activity

Each person writes one true, funny, patient-safe story from work on a card. Read a few aloud. Then discuss what the stories reveal about the stresses of the job.

How to run it

Play the episode together (8 minutes) or assign it beforehand. Start with the first question to let people react to the humor, then move to the harder ones. Remind the group that the episode is satire and some of its “facts” are invented; spotting which ones is a good exercise in itself.

Episodes are satirical and AI-generated; characters and “facts” in them may be fictional, which is part of what makes them good discussion starters. Tell us how it went: send feedback.
